About the Performance:
Responding to the “Brilliant Exiles: American Woman in Paris: 1900-1939” exhibition, Moveius Contemporary Ballet returns to the National Portrait Gallery with a work in inspired by the talented and independent American women in Paris who were determined to move beyond the limitations that restricted them at home.
Atlantic Paradox, a world premiere commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and choreographed by the museum's Choreographer in Residence, Diana Movius, draws inspiration from these exiles in Paris as they shed the constraints they faced as women in the United States. This piece will offer reflections on how these constraints and conformities of dress, occupation, and other societal limitations affected women’s ability to express their full, authentic selves - then and now.
