Dance Loft on 14 and Moveius Contemporary Ballet Announce 2023/24 Season
Including four Moveius performances, two youth & community productions, and a full season of dance education
Washington, D.C., October 10, 2023 - Artistic Director, Diana Movius, and Executive Director, Holly K. Oliver, are excited to announce Dance Loft on 14 and Moveius Contemporary Ballet’s full season lineup for the first time in the organization’s history. Dance Loft’s in-house professional ballet company will premiere several original and debut works. This fall, the company restages Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet, which broke ground in 2015 as the first ballet ever choreographed by a climate policy expert and the first ballet presented as part of an international climate conference in 2018. Moveius Contemporary Ballet’s home studios, Dance Loft, is pleased to announce their annual Nutcracker and Around the World community productions, in addition to a robust education schedule. The organization’s dance education includes full youth and adult semesters, masterclasses, weekly open company classes, and the upcoming year of Dance Loft’s Bilingual Youth Dance Program and Field Trip Experiences.
“We are thrilled to share Dance Loft on 14’s most expansive performance season to date with old and new audiences. With continual gratitude for our community and patrons that make our work possible, our artistic programming has the potential to reach more than ever before and further our mission: contributing to a city where local performing artists thrive, homegrown performances are regularly presented, and dance is accessible to a full range of audiences.”

Upcoming & Featured Events
Tipping Point, November 10-12, 2023 at Dance Loft on 14’s Blackbox Theater
Moveius Contemporary Ballet presents Tipping Point, a three-part meditation through dance on living in times of instability. Moveius’ Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet will take to the stage once more after it became the first ballet ever presented as part of an international climate conference in 2018. Created by Dance Loft/Moveius Artistic Director & Climate Policy Expert Diana Movius, this piece imagines the dancers as melting polar ice caps. Read more about the piece in The Washington Post here.
Associate Director, Alvaro Palau, and company member, Elizabeth Watson, present two news works focused on power dynamics. Watson’s Shortfall explores the effect of diminishing resources on a close-knit group, the drama heightened by percussive movements and the driving music of Maurice Ravel’s Bolero. Palau’s Birds of a Feather looks at both exile and belonging, loosely inspired by a flock of birds. With this compelling program, Moveius Contemporary Ballet presents an exciting evening of dance relevant to our current times.

Dance Education & Programming
Dance Loft on 14 prioritizes community-centered dance education to the residents of Ward 4 and beyond in their annual programming. Their studios offer year round adult and youth dance classes, ranging from ballet and world dance styles to hip hop and jazz, in addition to seasonal masterclass weekends and open company ballet with Moveius twice a week. Studio renters’ workshops can also be found within our own calendar. Registration and dates are at danceloft14.org/seasoncalendar. The organization’s most robust programs include their Bilingual Youth Dance Program and Field Trip Experiences. Their unique curriculum, piloted through the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities Creative Spark program, expands yearly and now serves over 500 youth in the area. Rather than teaching "how to dance," Dance Loft aims to ignite a creative spark in students and engage their artistic exploration through arts integration in line with core curriculum standards. About Dance Loft on 14
Guided by the belief in dance as a powerful means for cultural and social transformation, Dance Loft on 14’s mission is to expand access to dance and the performing arts in Washington, DC. We provide vital rehearsal and performance facilities and programs that catalyze artistic work and connect DC residents with the arts. We envision a city where local performing artists thrive, homegrown performances are regularly presented, and dance is accessible to a full range of audiences.
In 2010, Moveius was founded by Diana Movius as a performance ensemble, with successful runs at the Kennedy Center, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Dance Place, and Capital Fringe. The professional Moveius Contemporary Ballet ensemble continues to create productions and to be in residence at Dance Loft on 14.
In 2015, in response to the shortage of accessible rehearsal and performance space in DC, we envisioned and opened our Dance Loft on 14 facility. Located in a former 1920’s art-deco movie theater, Dance Loft on 14 catalyzes art and vibrancy in Washington, DC's Central 14th Street area while expanding access to the arts. Serving the city-wide dance and theater communities and our local neighborhood, Dance Loft on 14 provides rehearsal space for dance and theater artists, dance and movement classes for adults and youth, shared office space for small non-profits, a 120-seat black-box theater, and an array of high-quality performance programming in our spacious studios.
Dance Loft on 14 is proud to serve over 2500 artists yearly through our rentals program, over 500 youth in our classes, field trips, and Bilingual Dance Program, and community members at large via our adult programming and performance season.
